Tired of Writing JAMB? (Guide to Securing Admission into the University)
In Nigeria it is often said that
'getting admission' into the University is equivalent to securing an oil and
gas job. Some students have to write JAMB over and over again before gaining
admission. Most students give testimonies in the church when they are
finally admitted.
Factors that causes the unnecessary
delay in gaining admission into any Nigerian university (except private)
includes but not limited to the following:
- High population of secondary school leavers - where 10,000 candidates would be jostling for admission in a school that cannot admit more than 4,000 students.
- Corruption in the school system - having to buy your way into the university whether you score over 250 in JAMB or not.
- Students’ attitude - a situation whereby a student would want to read law or medicine and surgery in school by all means, even if it means writing JAMB over and over again.
- Pressure from parents/guardian - sometimes parent dictates the courses their wards are to study in school not considering their IQ level.
Consider gaining admission as a tough race and ask
yourself the following questions before buying your JAMB form:
·
How competitive is the course that I
intend to study? Some courses in the Nigerian educational system are highly
competitive while others are not. The good thing is, no course is a waste of
time in the university. Don’t habour the false believe that you must be a
Medical Doctor or a Lawyer before you are able to succeed in life – you can excel
in life irrespective of the course you studied in the university in as much as
you do well in school and graduate with a good result. Always consult your JAMB
brochure to determine the less competitive course before even thinking of
filling your JAMB form, except you are exceptionally brilliant ‘or’ you are
sure of passing through the ‘back door’.
·
What are my best subjects? Your best
subjects should be your JAMB subject combination. There is no law binding
science students to write ONLY Maths, English, Physics and Chemistry in JAMB –
so don’t act like there is one. Select four of your best subjects, consult JAMB
brochure to determine the courses you could study with such subject combination
and you would not regret it.
·
What will my parents do? Since your
parents will be footing your bills, it is NOT good to leave them in the dark. Create
time to inform your parents why you should rather study the course of your
choice instead of Law/Computer Science/Medicine and Surgery they are persuading
you to.
Follow the above recommendations and you will not
have to write JAMB over and over again!
